Yuriko Hori (堀 百合子 Hori Yuriko?), née Yuriko Koyanagi (小柳 百合子 Koyanagi Yuriko), is the wife of Kyōsuke Hori and the workaholic mother of Kyōko Hori and Sōta Hori.
Appearance[]
Yuriko is a beautiful woman with shoulder-length, dark brown hair styled with a portion of her bangs held back with a clip, whereas the fringes hang loosely on both sides of her face. Although her eyes can be seen closed, looking up close reveals that she has olive-colored eyes.
Highschool[]
Yuriko as a high school student in Chapter 119.7
In her years of high school, Yuriko looks very much like her daughter Kyōko Hori. In some scenes of the manga, she's usually seen with either her hair tied in a low ponytail or will sometimes let it down. Her bangs can be seen hanging over her forehead.
Hori-san to Miyamura-kun (OVA)[]
Yuriko's hair is seen as a lighter shade of brown, whereas her eyes appear to be chocolate-brown colored.
Personality[]
Yuriko is seen as a very gentle and caring mother, but also prone to being lazy in the kitchen.
In Chapter 119.7, as seen in a flashback of her days in high school, she was noted to have a serious side to her beneath the calm and collected front, thus heavily implying that she was no pushover. Kyōsuke Hori even once comments on how "Even though she's as gentle as a flower... and a "lily", at that... she's got thorns." after she slaps a younger female student for harassing her.
Plot[]
Due to being very busy with work for the most part, Yuriko is rarely seen at home, which often leads Kyōko Hori to do all the parenting for Sōta Hori in her absence.
Etymology[]
- The name Yuriko means "lily" (百合) (yuri) and "child" (子) (ko).
- In Chapter 119.7, Kyōsuke Hori comments on how "They say that names and natures often agree, but... Man, she smiled just like a flower."
- In the Victorian language of flowers, lilies portray love, ardor, and affection for your loved ones, while orange lilies stand for happiness, love, and warmth. All these meanings reflect on her kind personality and her loving relationship with her family.
- Before her marriage with Kyōsuke, Yuriko's maiden name Koyanagi means "small" (小) (ko) and "willow" (柳) (yanagi).
- Koyanagi is found mostly in eastern Japan, where some families pronounce the name Oyanagi.
Trivia[]
- Kyōko Hori mentioned that Yuriko's "specialty" is making curry, perhaps boiling in the bag kind.
- Yuriko does open her eyes in her introduction chapter and whenever she's shocked or acting motherly, but otherwise they're kept shut.
