History[]
Kyouko was born to Kyousuke Hori and Yuriko Hori as their first child and only daughter. Early on in her childhood, she met and became friends with Kakeru Sengoku, whose father went to the same school as Kyouko's parents and was well acquainted with them.[1] She and Kakeru would often play and bathe together,[2] although Kyouko would bully and tease him throughout their childhood, a relationship akin to her and Kakeru's parents' relationship. This eventually grew to Kakeru fearing Kyouko, although the two maintained a decent friendship.
Growing up, Kyouko was rather strong and aggressive, a trait that Kyousuke stated was likely inherited from her mother[3] and evidenced by her younger photos and interactions with Kakeru. At some point, Kyouko's parents became too busy with work to regularly be at home, leaving Kyouko to often fare for herself, even while she was sick.[4] After Souta Hori was born, Kyouko had to take on the daily responsibility of taking care of him without the presence of their parents and, as a result, was unable to do extracurriculars or go out with friends.[5]
During the winter of Kyouko's third year of junior high, she was seen teasing Kakeru and taking a video of him after he fell on the slippery pavement. Unbeknownst to her at the time, a young Izumi Miyamura and Kouichi Shindou had walked past them and witnessed the event.[6] She would later apply to Katagiri Senior High School alongside Kakeru, and she became close friends with Yuki Yoshikawa and Tooru Ishikawa.
Plot[]
In class, Kyouko greets her friend Yuki Yoshikawa and lets her copy off her English notes before their class begins. While they chat, Yuki brings up how another guy had asked her for Kyouko's email, and Kyouko tells her to tell him that she will turn him down and that he needs to ask her directly. As they continue talking, Kyouko accidentally hits her eraser off her desk. Izumi Miyamura, her classmate, returns it to her and walks away. Kyouko and Yuki quietly gossip about Izumi, believing him to be an otaku, given his quiet and dark nature. Yuki changes the subject and asks if Kyouko could join her and her friends at karaoke, but she turns her down.
Kyouko returns home after school, tying her hair up and quickly changing. She immediately begins cleaning the house and internally comments that she's always had to take care of the house with her parents' busy work schedules, hiding this side of herself from her friends and classmates.
