Cooking Class (調理実習 Chōri Jisshū?) is the second episode of the Horimiya: The Missing Pieces anime and fifteenth overall.
Synopsis[]
A few wallflowers at Katagiri High are dreading the approach of sports day. With a little help from their friends, however, things just might shape up for everyone. That is, IF Sakura can survive cooking class with the student council first!
Summary[]
The episode starts off with Kyouko Hori looking out the window inside the student council room, along with the rest of their friend group. Syu Iura barges in the student council room with the team assignment papers for sports day. Both Izumi Miyamura and Kakeru Sengoku do not want to participate on sports day, assuming it is because of the same reason why they didn't want to go swimming— so the boys do a rain dance.
To keep the number of girls and boys balanced on each team, each class divides into girls and boys, then assigns teams— either East team or West team. This means that they would have to go against their own classmates during the sports festival. Sengoku admits that if Yuki and Iura wasn't on their team, he would have just sat out and not participated. The girls are supposed to do a cheer routine, but Sakura Kouno is uncomfortable with that idea, as she feels like she has no dance/rhythm and will embarrass herself like last year.
Miyamura and Hori walk home from school and discuss their memories of sports day, and how Miyamura didn't have a good experience, due to his experiences with being bullied; however, Hori encourages Miyamura to participate in the 100-meter race because she feels like he is a good runner. This new revelation causes Miyamura to look forward to Sports Day.
The next scene shows Sakura, assigned to the West team, after the girls' cheer practice. She is sitting on the side of the building wall, anxious about the possibility that she'll end up making a fool out of herself again. Yuki, who was assigned to be on the East team, tries to help Sakura with her cheer routine. Sengoku watches from inside the school and wonders why two people from different teams are working together, then smiles because the two friends seemed to be having a lot of fun.
In their cooking class, Sengoku, Remi, and Sakura are group partners; however, only Sakura seems to know how to cook. Sengoku and Remi's lack of cooking skills frustrates Sakura as she lectures them throughout the entire class period— while the rest of the class has already finished. Sengoku accidentally cuts himself while cutting potatoes and Sakura takes him to the clinic to get a bandage. While they were gone, Remi decided to mix other ingredients into her bowl that Sakura previously asked her to mix. Her new concoction turned into a purple smoke that burned the other student's eyes, so they had to open a window. At the end of class, Sakura revealed that the class had prepared enough curry for the three of them, but the rice that Remi cooked was undercooked and said it looked like "soupy rice gruel.”
The following scene shows Yuki handing out Sports Day shirts. After Miyamura and Tooru got their shirts, they talk about Miyamura participating in the 100-meter. Tooru suggests Miyamura also do the relay race, but Miyamura is concerned about how the track team is participating in the relay, and how Iura got smoked by them in last year's relay race. Miyamura sees Hori's cheer outfit, but it was not what he expected. Instead of the traditional cheer uniform he had pictured Hori wearing, Hori is shown to be wearing a black jacket (similar to a boys' middle school uniform), white gloves, a green arm band, a white sash around her head, and a white tasuki (sash). When Hori asks Miyamura what he thinks of her cheer uniform, he says that "It's complicated."
The next scene takes place in their classroom. Hori notices Miyamura sitting closely next to another girl on the other side of the classroom during English class. She gets visibly jealous, which Tooru immediately notices. Shin Yasuda, their English teacher, calls on Hori to read a few lines from their textbook. She takes that opportunity to say what's on her mind with a menacing aura instead of reading the actual text. Once Miyamura and Hori arrive at Hori's place, Miyamura explains that the girl he was talking to forgot her textbook, and that was why he was sitting so close to her. Hori fails to admit that she was just jealous.
Hori tells Yuki about what happened, and Yuki says that Hori is scary when she's jealous. Yuki then asks Hori if she's the only one in her relationship that gets jealous, but Hori is not sure. Yuki tries to reassure her by telling her to “don't mind.” Tooru and Miyamura are seen walking across the walkway with boxes in their hands and greets Yuki and Hori. Tooru explains that they called a meeting for the Sports Day Committee over the intercom— which Yuki didn't hear because she was outside painting class signs. Hori then offers to help paint them, but Yuki is skeptical since Hori's lowest grade is in Art. Taiki Mizouchi, another classmate, notices Hori sneezing because of the cold weather. He takes off his blazer and places it in Hori's lap to keep her warm while she was outside painting, then leaves. Miyamura walks in from behind Hori to check in on her, but immediately gets a cold look as he notices another man's blazer on her lap. Jealous, Miyamura removes Mizouchi's blazer and replaces it with his own cardigan. Then, Miyamura puts on Mizouchi's blazer, to which shocks Hori. As Miyamura notices Mizouchi coming back, he quickly takes his cardigan back, takes off Mizouchi's blazer, and puts it back on Hori's lap— then hides somewhere. Hori gives back Mizouchi's blazer and he leaves. Miyamura comes out from hiding and admits that he wore Mizouchi's blazer so that Mizouchi wouldn't be able to tell the difference between Hori's body heat and Miyamura's body heat. This is when Hori realizes that Miyamura can get jealous too.
